Health & Safety
The Story Group is committed to providing a working environment that is safe and healthy for all employees and those affected by our activities. The Board is committed to the provision of strong and active leadership in such matters and has established a HSQE Department that monitors our procedures and operations to ensure the highest standards are achieved. By following this philosophy we have developed robust systems that are often applauded by our clients, and we are proud that our hard work is recognised through the winning of several awards for our safe practices.
Our Health & Safety Policy is communicated to all employees and the involvement of all individuals within the Group in the management of Health and Safety is constantly sought. The Group is actively involved in several industry led initiatives and believes that the emphasis placed on Health & Safety benefits everyone involved in our operations.

Green thinking
We take every effort to reduce the carbon footprint of our businesses and to minimise our effect on the environment. Robust site waste management plans, reuse of site materials and our recycling ballast process all help to fulfil our commitment to sustainability. Additionally, the company has fitted trackers and fuel save systems to company vans in order to reduce both pollution and fuel costs. Our plant machinery is set-up to run as silently as possible, using bio-degradable oil and reusing spent oil.
Recycled aggregates at Kingmoor Local Distribution Centre
With growing requirements for improved sustainability the utilisation of recycled materials is increasingly important. Each year approximately 275 million tonnes of aggregates are used as raw construction materials in the UK with around 25% derived from recycled or secondary sources. This percentage is higher than many other European countries but has the potential to be expanded further by utilising materials such as reprocessed rail ballast, as available from the Story Reprocessing Facility.
The aggregate we can supply is 100% recycled 6F2 and Type 1 sub base which means our customers can be confident they are purchasing a sustainable aggregate from an environmental friendly facility without compromising on quality.
Both our Type 1 sub base and 6F2 aggregate were used by Carillion in the M74 motorway extension from Carlisle to Gretna - see our Viper timelapse video.
