Children from Carlisle Mencap receive a different type of delivery from Story Construction
15th April 2011
Alistair Grant, Pre-Contracts Manager for Story Construction has been delivering something non construction related to Carlisle Mencap – and the children certainly seemed pleased with the unexpected sweet delivery.

Alistair commented: “I was delighted to go to Carlisle Mencap and deliver the Easter eggs. I was overcome by the sense of happiness that was evident within the group upon my arrival. When it became known that Easter eggs were being handed out, happiness turned to joy.”
Sheila Gregory, Chief Executive Officer at Carlisle Mencap said ‘The children, who all have disabilities, thoroughly enjoyed the visit and receiving their eggs. We are really grateful to Story Group and Alistair for making Easter more special. Story Group have really taken our charity to heart, getting involved in lots of activities and four brave people from Story Group, including Alistair, also helped us by abseiling from the civic centre recently and raising around £1,000.’
Story Construction has been appointed as main contractor for the much needed ‘Grace Little Centre’ which is to be built on land at Kingmoor Park. Work has already started on the ½ million pound bespoke respite care centre. The 350 sq metre building comprises of two adjoining, self contained bungalows which include five bedrooms, hydrotherapy unit, soft play / activity / IT area and sensory room as well as kitchen/dining areas, assisted bathrooms, lounge, office and reception, as well as plenty of storage facilities.
To meet the needs of those who will use the new centre, there are many specialist features to this build including rise and fall baths, rise and fall hob, sink and ovens, wider and interlocking doors, overhead hoisting track and under floor heating. The external finishes will consist of a car park, ramps and handrails to assist with disabled access. There is also a patio area and garden consisting of various shrubs and trees for the children to enjoy during sunny weather.
Alistair added: “We are delighted to be involved with this project which is a much needed facility for Carlisle Mencap. It is a challenging project in terms of budget and timescales but I’m confident we will be able to deliver the scheme within these confines.
“We will be using local sub contractors as far as possible to complete the building and bringing in specialist services where needed such as the hydrotherapy area. We have worked closely with the client and Architects Plus to suggest ways to make savings to enable the project to go ahead.”
It is anticipated that the new building will take 27 weeks to construct and will be finished in October.
