Sark bridge widening, Gretna

Works comprised of the demolition of an existing steel bailey bridge together with the extension of an existing sandstone twin arched bridge. The existing carriageway was in operation at all times with minimal disruption caused, whilst the new bridge façade was constructed in new materials to match the existing stonework.

The bridge was awarded a Conservation Commendation in the Saltire Civil Engineering Awards for “recognition of the care taken in design and the high quality achieved in construction in the widening of this historically important bridge”

“The widening of this historic bridge has been carried out sympathetically and with excellent workmanship leading to an attractive and functional structure capable of dealing with modern traffic, while maintaining its historic appeal. The work has been carried out on time and within budget and to a high standard of workmanship”.
