Nelson Bridge, Carlisle
The works involved the widening of Nelson Bridge, originally built in 1852, to accommodate an additional carriageway and comprised extensions to the existing abutments on bored cast in-situ piles.
The extended deck over the River Caldew is supported on new steel arches and the portion over the cycleway is supported on a new steel beam RC composite deck. Taking down, restoring and rebuilding masonry parapets and the procurement of and building with local sandstone were undertaken in-house.
Extensive service diversions were undertaken and the whole project carried out under traffic management.
