This fast track project comprised site preparation works and construction of a model Aldi store with 900m2 sales area. The building has in-situ concrete foundations, a steel frame with facing brick infill walls and aluminium composite roof and wall cladding.
Story Construction were initially awarded the 278 works, which involved construction of a mini-roundabout at the site entrance and extensive road and footway improvements to the busy junction between Petteril Road and London Road (A6). As package contractors working directly for Aldi, Story were responsible for traffic management on one of the busiest routes into Carlisle, the A6, and obtained a one way closure on Petteril Bank Road to allow construction of the roundabout.
Whilst the 278 works were being carried out Story commenced the groundworks package, comprising foul and surface water drainage, including attenuation, in-situ concrete foundations and a surfaced carpark of approximately 3000m2 complete with kerbing, footpaths and white lining. The brickwork package, which included the carpark perimeter walling, was also won by Story with 2000m2 of bricks and blocks being laid in an 8 week period.
Overall the works packages undertaken by Story were completed 2 weeks earlier than the original completion date. In the absence of a main contractor Story were also able to partly fill this role in assisting Aldi directly with providing attendances to other specialist subcontractor trades and in carrying out additional works not allocated to a trade package.
