The extension is on two levels, part at the same level as the existing facility and the majority at a finished floor level 4.65m below the existing. The lower level is accommodated by the construction of a 4.65m high reinforced concrete retaining wall. The waterproofing for this wall is achieved by the use of an additive in the concrete, carefully controlled at the batching plant, which eliminates the requirement for an external tanking system.

Prior to commencement on the extension an existing 375mm diameter foul drain was diverted as part of the works.

We had to react to late changes in the design of the retaining wall including altered head detail at the tie-in to the new high level floor slab and extensions to the wing walls.

Part of the structural steel frame sat on the retaining wall foundation and part on reinforced strip foundations. In order to save time, the rebar for the strip foundations was prefabricated on site.

A service road to the perimeter of the extension was also constructed as part of the works.
